Dr Bronner’s Soap

FineFettle Beard Conditioner

So you might have noticed that there is an element of the kleptomaniac about the folks out there that review products, I certainly feel the need to possess all, yes ALL of the products available to the hirsute gentleman.  It should be noted that it is not a slight against the products that have been used in the past and neither are they discounted but when I started doing this I wanted to find the definitive, the holy grail, there was always a drive to find the ultimate life changing product.  Of course I soon realised that there is no ultimate product, what works for me may not work for the next guy but in this review I bring you a product that just might make you a happier man with  healthier facial hair.

I first heard about the Dr Bronner’s bar soap on a rather excellent video from Enoch on his YouTube channel Beardfellows which you must subscribe to by the way.  I have  been an advocate of the beard specific shampoo or soap bar and have reviewed a couple here and find myself irked to hear that so many guys out there are using the head hair chemical laden commercial products.  I’m not going to go into the reasons why as the video does a sound job but just look at these ingredients found in a leading head hair shampoo :    Active ingredient: Pyrithione zinc 1%    Inactive ingredients: water, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamide MEA, zinc carbonate, glycol distearate, dimethicone, fragrance, cetyl alcohol, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, magnesium sulfate, sodium benzoate, magnesium carbonate hydroxide, ammonium laureth sulfate, benzyl alcohol, sodium chloride, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, sodium xylenesulfonate, blue 1, red 4

My rule is if I cant read it or say it then it’s probably not something I want to be using on my face, so in contrast what does Dr Bronner’s contain ?

Ingredients: Organic Coconut Oil*, Organic Palm Oil*, Sodium Hydroxide**, Water, Organic Eucalyptus Oil, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic fairDeal Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Tocopherol

* CERTIFIED FAIR TRADE INGREDIENTS
** None remains after saponifying oils into soap and glycerin

So for me its a no brainer, ingredients alone these soaps had me sold, and once I used them I was convinced that they deserve the reputation they have.  I started out with the peppermint bar soap and it does an amazing job at cleaning your hair, your beard and moustache, your skin cleaning pores, even your soul. Wait what?  Sorry I may have got a bit carried away there but the peppermint scent of this in a warm shower really does wonders for your sinuses and its a really invigorating and enlivening scent.  The peppermint leaves a lovely tingle and was very effective at removing pomades and waxes that contain petroleum jelly which many other soaps have struggled with, yet the hairs remained well cared for and not dried out after.  Really remarkable stuff and at around £7 to my door might seem a little expensive to some, but I say try this before you make judgement, this will replace any other cleansing toiletries you have and lasted me a full month so add what you spend on shower gel, face cleansers, shampoo and it’s probably about the same.

I was so impressed with the bar soap but had heard that some chaps with more hair found the liquid better for them and so in the name of research I sent a cheeky email to Evolution Organics who rather kindly sent me the 237ml Eucalyptus liquid bottle completely gratis for the purpose of this review which was jolly nice of them don’t you think?  This did not disappoint in terms of its function though I prefer the peppermint scent and so will get the peppermint liquid next time. This one leaves you feeling very clean and fresh and the scent would rouse a hibernating bear, and some of you might find that useful! This bottle has lasted an age actually, I think about a month and it’s just under half full, see half full not half empty, such is the positive effect of Eucalyptus.  I’m not a massive guy but I’m also not diminutive but I find a palm full is enough to get me all soapy, so assuming you are in proportion you should be fine.  Apologies though if you are gigantor with diddy hands or in fact possess a hand that even Hellboy would think it outlandishly big, but you get my point, a little soap goes a very long way.

Both products get a great lather going, you will notice that your hair will feel different compared to when using regular shampoos but this is because your regular shampoos coat your hair in synthetics to make it feel silky and smooth.  The thing is when you look at a human hair under a microscope you will note it is not smooth and sort jagged, this is what clean chemical free hair feels like and when you dry it you will be remarkably impressed. Not only will your hairs be nice a soft they will have a good shine and your skin too will be better nourished.

For some there may be a trade-off period when you start using this as your hairs have been stripped of their natural oil defence for so long that it will take time for you hairs to start looking after themselves again, but when that happens boy will you notice it so stick with it for a bit, because you’re worth it!

My head and moustache hair is in excellent condition, these soaps are good enough to clean but so gentle that they protect. If you are in the UK then please do visit the guys at Evolution Organics and get yourself some Dr Bronners they gave excellent service and fast delivery.  I’m not sure what scent to try next, tea tree maybe?

hey do you reccomend the dr bronners lotion. Is it true using the lotion will clog pores and is not helathy for beards ?

Hi Jay, I’m not aware of the the lotion so can’t directly comment on it. What would you want to use a lotion for on your beard? Oils or lanolin is better for skin and hair health

I enjoy the thorough product evaluations. I will certainly be trying Dr. Bronner’s and hope to add it to my care routine. As the owner/operator of an ever-silvering moustache (grey is such an ugly word), I on occasion use Shimmer Lights Shampoo to combat the yellowing which often dulls silver head hair. This product is getting harder to find here in The States, so I don’t know if it is even marketed in the UK or Europe. In any event, the idea behind this product can be likened (at the risk of dating myself!) to adding bluing to white linens during laundry. I must caution: this product is to be used only as needed, as over-use can result in a grandfathering into the Blue Hair set. I use it 1-2 times monthly as a switch from normal shampoo. I must say, it certainly adds shine and sparkles the silver ‘stache. As a side notation, I am rather enjoying the many benefits of the growing out process, one of which being that I no longer see 50 shades of grey on the lavatory floor at dawn.

It’s a great product, also check out Dudu Osun back soap, it’s my new favourite and I shall review it soon. Shimmer lights shampoo isn’t something I’ve heard of and sounds interesting indeed. I’m pleased to hear the growing out is bringing you joy and also reducing your floor cleaning regime.

Dudu Osun. Got it. I’ll investigate this. Thank you for the recommendation!

It’s great, not just for facial hair. It’s replaced everything and lasts me 6 weeks using daily from base to apex

Remarkably economic! I wouldn’t have guessed that about it’s total-care uses. I’ll give it a go. By the by, my apex isn’t what it used to be.

Haha, neither is mine! Yes I think if it’s good enough for my face it’s good for the rest

I absolutely love the information you have given out. I’ve applied your techniques and have found myself convincing fellow co-workers to grow a handlebar mustache. Currently sporting a stiletto beard and handlebar mustache and hope to grow it another three inches. Danke!
