NoWaxWeek – Love Your Natural Moustache

As you may have noticed I personally prefer a natural look to my moustache the reasons why I feel this way are many. I must say I still like to wear wax and I enjoy greatly testing the various ones that come my way, yet there are definitely drawbacks to constantly reaching for the styling aid.  Even the easiest applying waxes take their toll on the hairs as you pull and shape things into form as well as the definite loss in volume as the hairs stick together.

I get a number of requests from guys asking me what the best wax is, these chaps are in need of a product to get the look they want or to tame their unruly beast of a lip warmer, or so they think!  I believe that you can create a great style using the hairdryer as in my styling article and in doing so you can enjoy the freedom of a natural but well styled moustache.

The idea of #nowaxweek came about on Instagram where I thought I would try to get guys learn what they can achieve and unburden them from the hold of wax.  I believe that once you have gone a week with no wax you will love the freedom and ease of wearing the moustache in this way.  Therefore when you do wear wax you will need less of it resulting in less stress to your hairs with the result being a finer healthier moustache.

If you fancy taking part please follow me on instagram, and use #nowaxweek to join the ranks of the fine fellows below.

This No Wax Week was a great idea and I’m glad I took the plunge.

I had been, up until I began my No Wax Week, getting a little bit frustrated with my handlebar. I’ve had mine for about eight months and it has filled in well, but there are times where it can be unruly and there are times where the curls aren’t as full as I’d like them to be. I was fighting the ‘stache and the results were often less than I’d have liked them to be. I was using wax to force the whiskers into shape, rather than taking the time to use the hairdryer and really get the look I like, then apply wax for hold. I was seriously thinking about taking a razor to it and bidding it adieu.

    Cue No Wax Week.

The first day was tough, as I was nervous about how things would hold up throughout my commute and at work, but with the help of a little bit of lanolin, I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only did things keep their shape nicely, but there is a much fuller look to my moustache without wax. I can get a pretty decent spread on it and blowdry the ends (which have a tendency to get kinky and curly) into submission, then just apply a little bit of lanolin to keep things tamed down and soft. The lanolin doesn’t have much hold, but it certainly helps with the frizziness and definitely helps things take on a nice shape. I also noticed that, since we were suffering from some extremely cold weather, lanolin can get fairly stiff in the cold, so be careful of that. I quickly learned to warm the lanolin up before applying it, which made a big difference.

As I made my way through No Wax Week, growing ever more confident each day, I got to know my moustache better and I figured out how to really get a look and style I like with the blowdryer before I ever applied any product. This was a great revelation and well worth the effort. I will definitely be spending many more days wax-free in the future! Thanks to Stu for the initiative.

I cannot begin to tell you how happy that makes me. I wonder just how many men remove their moustaches because they got fed up, it doesn’t bare thinking about! You have certainly embraced the idea behind nowaxweek Jack, its about learning to love your moustache as it is, but also to learn what you and it can achieve if you work together, it makes for a much happier existence for the man and also the moustache as its not being bent to its masters will. Furthermore your use of lanolin is very encouraging too, it is certainly my favourite thing to use and I will have something big coming in the near future so keep an eye out.

Thanks again Jack, it really means a lot that you have taken time to add your thoughts here. You sir are a gent and long may you be Hirsute for Happiness
